The Rip Van Winkle Diet

Can you really lose weight while sleeping? The Rip Van Winkle Diet is not something I have ever heard, but there considerable research and evidence to prove that you will struggle to lose weight if you are not getting a proper amount of sleep.

One study was conducted back in 2005 with the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The study was conducted over several years with 8,000 adults. The outcome of the study? Sleeping fewer than seven hours per night was tied to a greater risk of weight gain and obesity. And the risk increased if even less sleep was experienced.

Other studies have shown an imbalance in appetite hormones, namely Leptin and Ghrelin, which accompany sleep deprivation; these same hormones can ruin your diet plans.

Earlier this year, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition measured the caloric intake of two groups of men; the one with considerably less sleep actually consumed about 500 calories per day more than the other group.

If you suffer from obesity, there is a chance that you have an increased likelihood toward sleep problems such as: day time sleepiness, apnea or habitual snoring.

How much sleep is enough? That depends. Most experts suggest that seven to eight hours per sleep a night is plenty while some suggest that eight be the minimum. Regardless, there is a mound of evidence that indicates that getting less than seven hours per night has an adverse effect on your weight and over productivity, happiness and health.

My personal view is that it truly is an individual situation and that your body can be trained over time to resolve any risks associated with limited sleep. But I am not a doctor or health care professional. I base my view on past personal experience where there have been sustained periods of only five and a half hours of sleep with no degradation in quality of life; I also have known several individuals who coped on less than 5 hours a night over extended years.

Sleep is important. Diet is important. How we conduct ourselves throughout our day is important. And something equally if not more important, are the little thoughts that run through our mind day in day out.

Thoughts build our future. Our thoughts should be positive impressions of our future. They should be positive thoughts that hold our situation as healthy and peaceful - even if we exist in places or times that are not healthy or peaceful. Our thoughts are our future and it is important to have a compelling view of yourself.
