So! You Want to Be a Vegetarian?

Becoming a veggie is really not that hard, especially nowadays when there is so much choice.
Most of the time we do have to fit into what society requires from us and conform to what is supposedly the norm…the done thing. But, whatever your reason for wanting to follow the vegetarian lifestyle, remember, we do still have freedom of choice. If it’s for reasons of health or maybe animal welfare, or you just can’t see any justification for animals to die so that we can live, it is your choice and you have a right to it. Opting to not eat meat or fish and become what is known as a vegetarian is if course a personal choice that we are still at liberty to undertake.
For a veggie it can be quite amusing at times when asked if you would like a ham sandwich…and when replying politely that you don’t eat meat, the quick retort is, “are you a vegetarian; what on earth do you eat then?” The usual response is “the same as you, except for the meat.” Possibly being a meat eater it would be difficult to comprehend what you might substitute for the meat but the selection today is so extensive that they would be amazed. Really, if you aren’t well-informed the world of vegetarianism can seem totally alien and it can seem rather daunting at first.
However, there is more understanding nowadays because of all the diverse cultures that we experience and have become accustomed to. Really, given some thought, all that you would be leaving out of your diet is meat and fish..it’s no big deal.
Before you set a date to start it is advisable to have a look in the shops at the amount of options that you have; you will be pleasantly surprised. Buy a vegetarian cookery book, stock up with several days supply so that you don’t run out and start to waver. As with all food, you are not going to like everything that you try, don’t give up, vegetarian food is delicious, you just need to find what appeals to you.
Eating In Restaurants
The choices for vegetarians over thirty years ago was very limited, it was either omelettes or omelettes. Today, not only is there recognition of the need to cater for a range of dietary requirements, there is nearly always two or more veggie options.
What About Wedding Or Party Buffets?
As with restaurants, people are more aware now that there might be vegetarians among there guests and cater accordingly. You can usually find something to nibble, but it is a good idea to eat before you go and then you will not feel so hungry and disappointed if there isn’t much provided for you.
Dinner Party Invitations
It is usually friends that invite you to dinner parties and would know about your preference.
However, if you think that they wouldn’t know it is advisable to inform them politely, so not to cause embarrassment. You can be sure that they would want to know beforehand, after all, they want you to enjoy yourself.
Holidays
Now…other countries are a different matter. If you want to go abroad you will have to accept that you may find it difficult. In any country that you visit I’m sure that you will find something you can eat and you won’t starve, but just remember that it isn’t forever and perhaps pack a few snacks in your case.
It is a personal choice to start slow leaving out one thing at a time or go for it wholeheartedly straight away; whatever is easiest for you. You must take into account that your digestive system will be experiencing different combinations of food and will have to accustom itself with dealing with them. Be prepared that you could observe more flatulence and that your toilet habits may change also. However, this isn’t anything to be alarmed at and will settle itself in time.
Keep cool…don’t get stressed and it will all fall into place.
