Is it Safe to Put My Newborn on a Vegetarian Diet?
Posted by fitnessguru in Prescription Diet Drugs, Weight Loss on April 29th, 2009
The first thing that comes to mind when talking about newborns and vegetarian foods, is that you should be very careful in choosing formulas and solid foods for your child.
If you are living on a vegetarian diet and are planning to breastfeed your child, there is a chance that you need supplement breast milk with additional sources of nutrition. It all depends on your restrictions. If you are a very strict vegetarian or vegan, you might need to add extra sources of B-12 vitamin to your child’s diet.
Your newborn baby should be able to receive all micro and macronutrients trough your breast milk, even if you are on a very strict vegetarian diet.
If for some reason you cannot breast feed your child and are planning to use a formula, you should stick to the commercial ones, which contains the right amount of nutrients. If you go and make the formulas yourself out of soymilk or another homemade formula, you child could experience lack of proper nutrition. There are a few commercial formulas based on soy milk you can use, but be sure that they contain the amount and proper ratios of nutrients.
When your child is about a year old, you can begin to supplement the formulas or the breastfeeding with other sources of nutrition, such as soy milk, yogurt and if you are not vegan, milk from cows.
It is wise to keep your infant on a full fat diet with high protein after the first year. This diet can be vegetarian friendly as you can use food such as smashed avocados, soy milk, tofu, milk and yogurt.
When your child is ready to start with solid foods, you can introduce tofu, small pieces of soft bread, vegetarian burgers and pieces of avocado, eggs and cheese.
If you maintain a full fat diet with lots of proteins and make sure that your child gets supplements, then it is safe to keep your child on a vegetarian diet during her crucial development stages.
