This article is an introduction to Atkins, both the person and the diet. The Atkins diet first became famous way back in 1972 and was dismissed by some as another fad diet. However, more than 35 years on and the diet is as popular as ever proving that Atkins is anything but a fad diet.

So let’s begin with a brief introduction to Atkins the person. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1951 and received his medical degree in 1955 with a specialty in Cardiology. He released his the first book about the diet entitled “Dr Atkins Diet Revolution” in 1972. Despite being dismissed as a fad diet it has been reprinted more than 28 time and sold more than 10 million copies.

So let’s move on to an introduction to Atkins the diet. The diet is a low carbohydrate diet - instead your diet is high in protein and fat. Carbohydrates are your body’s main source of energy. By reducing your bodies intake of carbohydrates to such a low level, Dr Atkins believed that you could introduce the body to a state called ketosis. this is where the body burns fat for energy instead. He claimed that the body burned fat faster than carbohydrate so that even though your diet was high in fat you still lost weight.

The diet emphasizes meat, cheese, and eggs as its main foods whilst discouraging foods such as bread, pasta, fruit, and sugar. In 2006, the Atkins diet has effectively been relaunched with less of an emphasis business strategy that softened the emphasis on the low carbohydrate diet and concentrated more on the sales of prepared nutritional bars and shakes.

As a final part of this introduction to Atkins, we’ll cover how the diet works. It is split into four phases, the first is the weight loss stage and this is where the main focus is on low carbs. Once the first phase is complete, you can move through three other stages, the final stage being a diet for life - a diet that you can follow once you have reached your goal weight and which should keep you at your goal weight for the rest of your life. And that concludes this introduction to Atkins.
