Even the best diets in my list of the top ten diets that actually work has been promoted with a significant amount of hype. The creators of the plans, in many cases, make grand claims about the features and benefits of the plans. Does this mean that the diets don’t work? No, however it does mean that you should proceed with caution and perform due diligence. The following are some of the myths I uncovered while performing my diet research.

1) Myth #1 - You Won’t Be Hungry

Sorry, this one is generally untrue. When your body is accustomed to a certain level of caloric consumption, and that level is reduced, your body sends you signals that it needs more fuel. These signals are nature’s way of keeping an organism adequately nourished and healthy.

2) Myth #2 - You Won’t Gain Your Weight Back

Unfortunately, even with diets that actually work, many individuals gain their weight back. Some gained the weight back quickly, almost immediately. With some it took longer.

Dieters who came the closest to reaching their weight loss goals did the best job of keeping weight off. In fact, in one study, of the dieters who reached their weight loss goals, 41% gained their weight back within 1 year. A whopping 87% of dieters that failed to reach their weight loss goals, gained their weight back within 1 year!

My research with diets that work, revealed that diet programs that featured a variety of foods, produced the best results for individuals trying to maintain their weight loss. Also, diets that emphasized a maintenance program had better results for maintaining weight loss.

“Expiry” should also be understood to occur once a supply of medications is no longer used appropriately for it’s intended purpose. Children often require dose adjustments to accommodate their size while many human drugs are often unsuitable for pets. Even a simple food like chocolate that we may enjoy can easily be toxic to a pet dog.

Another mechanism whereby medication expiry is dangerous occurs when an unfinished supply is used despite new information that points to increased precautions associated with the medication or that has led to it’s recall. An example is obtaining pain relief from a previous supply of a painkiller like Vioxx (rofecoxib) or Celebrex (celecoxib) in spite of an existing heart condition that is now known to relate to an increased risk of fatality under those circumstances of consumption.

Expired medications that are kept instead of discarded not only take up space but can actually discourage the appropriate use of new supplies in the treatment of illness. A medication cabinet, if not tended to regularly, could eventually contain more expired medications than viable ones and this can lead to the accidental consumption of an expired medication in place of a viable one. It is definitely advisable to clear the medication cabinet of expired medicaitons at least annually if not more often.

A further danger however, lies in how expired medications are disposed of. Expired medications and pharmaceutical byproducts can be harmful to the environment especially when they end up in our rivers and drinking water supply. Hormonal compounds like estrogen from birth control pills and patches as well as antibiotics have been linked to being flushed by individuals and institutions into sewage, draining largely unchanged and collecting in rivers and streams, then returning in tiny amounts into drinking water. Traces of antibiotics could worsen bacterial resistance while estrogens and other steroids are known to change the reproductive characteristics of fish. Even trace amounts of chemotherapy medications have emerged in tap water and this could be severely detrimental to the unborn babies of pregnant women who drink such water. The long-term impact on human health of medications in our rivers and drinking water is as yet unknown but no one would want to wait to find out. We can all play our part by inquiring on and using pharmacy or state-run programs for the disposal of expired medications instead of sending them down the sink or the toilet bowl.

The other day, I got an email from a woman who told me that her sister was getting married in six months.  Her goal was to go down 3 dress sizes by that time.  Specifically, she felt that she had about thirty pounds to lose.  To paraphrase, she asked me “how long does it take for the weight to come off on Medifast?  If I have thirty pounds to lose, how soon will this happen? How long will it really take?”  I’ll tell you what I told her in the following article.
